Step into Pittsburgh’s haunted past with Pittsburgh Ghosts to hear the history of the Old Allegheny County Jail, which once housed Pittsburgh's most notorious criminals, many awaiting execution, as the jail saw 58 hangings between 1888 and 1911. The jail’s grim history includes chilling tales like that of Frederick Fitzsimmons, who escaped using smuggled tools, only to end his life rather than return. Ghostly encounters abound, including apparitions of former inmates and echoes of anguished souls. Among the most infamous was the tale of Warden’s wife Kate Soffel, who fell in love with death-row inmate Ed Biddle and helped him and his brother escape. Their doomed attempt ended with the brothers’ deaths and Kate's imprisonment, but her spirit is said to linger, along with those of countless others who met untimely ends.
Learn about the infamous Frick Building, once the tallest structure in Pittsburgh and a monument to industrialist Henry Clay Frick’s controversial legacy. Frick, whose fortune stemmed from the steel and coke industries, became infamous for his brutal opposition to organized labor. The violent Homestead Strike of 1892, which resulted in numerous deaths, left a stain on his reputation. Later that year, Russian anarchist Alexander Berkman attempted to assassinate him, shooting him twice and stabbing him in his office. Miraculously, Frick survived, crediting his calm demeanor to a vision of his deceased daughter, Martha. Employees and visitors have reported shadowy figures and unexplained phenomena, adding a spectral layer to its historical grandeur.
These spectral tales reveal a darker side of Pittsburgh, where the echoes of the past refuse to fade. Book your Pittsburgh ghost tour tonight and be sure to like, subscribe, and hit the bell icon for more spine-chilling stories from US Ghost Adventures!
